ASCENDED MASTER
TEACHINGS
ON THE MACROBIOTIC DIET

[Elizabeth Clare Prophet, POW Vol.32 No.30, July 23, 1989]:

"As pertains to diet, however, thus far on my road to the Inner Buddha I have found the Unique Principle of the Yin and the Yang, which is the foundation of the macrobiotic diet, to be a sound and practical guide to balancing the daily regimen. And the macrobiotic diet I find to be the closest approximation that can be made by Westerners to the diet of the Eastern adepts. If we would attain the adeptship of the Christ and the Buddha, we should also imitate their eating habits. For then we'll be made of the same stuff they're made of."

[Beloved El Morya, POW Vol. 46 No.8, February 23, 2003]:

"Now, watch your diets. Keep yourself yang, to right of center. When you go to the left of center, you do not have the strength to hold your peace. So always maintain a diet that keeps you to the right of center--not too far right but just enough to know that you can hold the balance against the yin forces that may come upon you. With that accuracy of being to the right of center--and realizing that no matter what diet you have espoused I have directed you back continually to the macrobiotic diet--when you follow that diet and understand it and realize that it is necessary for you to learn to cook your own food, your own macrobiotic food, you will see a peace in you that you may not have seen for a very long time."

[The Buddha of the Ruby Ray, POW Vol.37 No.7, February 13, 1994]:

"I purge the vessels and the arteries with light, with Ruby Ray, as much as the Great Law will allow and to levels that you can adjust to. [22-second pause]  Now then, follow the recommendations for the strengthening and clearing of the physical heart that have come to you out of the East under the name of the macrobiotic diet. Pursue whatever healing methods are lawful, but above all remember that it is the Ruby Ray and the Ruby Ray Buddha that can give you the strengthening of the heart, the renewal of the heart, the rejuvenation of the heart. Call to me daily, giving the preamble of the Dhyani Buddhas before you offer your prayers. You can tie that preamble to any prayer for the healing of the physical heart in yourself and loved ones. You can use it for those undergoing open-heart surgery. And the violet flame is key, beloved. For some conditions of the heart are karmic; others are simply karmic by a lifetime of wrong diet. Thus, hardness of heart must dissolve by the Ruby Ray and the violet flame if you would have the renewal of the heart."

[Elizabeth Clare Prophet, POW Vol.35 No.12, March 22, 1992]:

"The eighth precept is Right Concentration. If you can't concentrate on anything for more than a split second, then you really can't meditate on God. Try meditating on God or Jesus for fifteen minutes at the point of the brow. This is the place of the third eye, where your inner sight is opened. Monitor your thoughts and see if they stray and if you think about something else while you are trying to think about Jesus. It's not easy but it helps to have your favorite portrait of Jesus in front of you to bring your attention back to him through your devotion. Some Westerners find it difficult to focus their attention on God for any length of time. But practice, and cooking and eating the right macrobiotic diet for you, will greatly increase your power of concentration."

[Beloved Surya, POW Vol.32 No.19, May 7, 1989]:

"This is truly the wisdom of the hour. And therefore I caution you against being overly optimistic or overly pessimistic but, being centered in God-Reality, to have the awareness that the bell does toll for you individually and that first and foremost it is the responsibility of the Lightbearers to deal with their own karma. And without dealing with that karma, [which some refuse to do, demanding that another bear it in their stead,] you have a weight upon you whereby we cannot increase illumination, we cannot increase God-mastery even if you become the most perfect and adept student on the macrobiotic dietFor there are evil individuals, beloved, who have perfected their bodies on that diet and they are by no means our instruments. There are black magicians who follow such diets. Thus [the instrument] is only as good as the vessel and the vessel is only as good as the soul and the soul is only as food as the spirit, the heart, and the mind. Recognize, then, that that preparedness will provide us the means for your own saving grace. And once you understand that you cannot save another until you save yourself, you will make it your business to save yourself in every level of being, to attain wholeness at every level of being, to attain balance in all of your chakras, to get rid of, I say–as quickly as the call can be answered according to the will of God–the last vestiges of the dweller-on-the-threshold, and also to see your karma pass into the flame."

[Elizabeth Clare Prophet, POW Vol.33 No.11, March 18, 1990]:

"We have all the tools we need to achieve our victory in this age. We have the lost teachings of Jesus restored and we have the macrobiotic diet to restore our bodies to wholeness. We have the violet flame that we can call forth to transmute those negative elements of our astrology and our psychology. God has given us the opportunity to make ourselves fit to be parents who will bring forth these Lightbearers."

[Beloved Lanello, POW Vol.38 No.9, Feb 26, 1995]:

"Keep your beings in a yang state, slightly more yang than yin. Partake sparingly, or not at all, of those heavy meats that cause acidity and even the dulling of the brain."

[Footnote to POW Vol.32 No.44, October 29, 1989]:

"The macrobiotic approach to understanding the relationship between psychological problems and weaknesses in various organs is explained in the book Macrobiotics and Human Behavior by William Tara (currently out of print). [Elizabeth Clare Prophet in "Letter" in bound 1988 POW Book 1 following page 238, dated 2/24/88 entitled "Save the World With Violet Flame"]:
"The macrobiotic diet is a balancing healthy diet that prepares us for survival in a nuclear age and provides a way to reverse the biological and spiritual degeneration of mankind. The foods that we should eat are the foods that are strong building blocks for a healthy body. These are found in the macrobiotic diet.

The dietary discipline of macrobiotics was traditionally used in former golden ages. It primarily consists of whole grains. In the East brown rice was called 'the gift of the gods.' Other grains such as buckwheat, millet, barley, wheat, oats, rye and corn have also been used as staple foods throughout the ages. Whole grains are high in complex carbohydrates, iron, B vitamins, calcium, zinc, trace minerals and fiber. These elements are useful in guarding against the absorption of radioactive substances. Grains are also a good source of protein and are low in sodium and fat.

In addition to whole grains, the main foods that are recommended in the macrobiotic diet are fresh local vegetables, beans and bean products, white deep-sea fish (especially for transition from a red-meat diet to a macrobiotic diet), seeds, sea vegetables, seasonal local fruits and several fermented foods like miso and tamari.

How much of each type of food you eat should be adjusted according to your personal needs, age, conditions in the body, the climate, season, etc. For restoring and maintaining health, 30 to 60 percent of our daily food intake should be grains and 30 to 50 percent should consist of vegetables including a variety of leafy green round and root vegetables.

Fresh vegetables, like grains, are a good source of fiber. Fiber promotes the growth of beneficial bacteria in the intestines and helps digestion. These bacteria synthesize the B vitamins and prevent harmful microorganisms from multiplying and producing toxins and carcinogens (cancer-causing agents). The sulfur-containing amino acids that are found in vegetables bind with toxins, enabling the body to discharge them.

Vegetables also build the blood, the thymus, and the immune system, and their many nutrients fortify the body against the absorption of radioactive elements. When vegetables are not organic they should be put in cold salted water for at least a half hour to pull out the chemicals and pesticides as much as possible. Boiling the vegetables in lightly salted water helps to preserve their natural minerals (it is important to use sea salt).

Minerals that are necessary to prevent the body's absorption of radioactive elements, such as calcium, iron, iodine and potassium, are found abundantly in sea vegetables. Kombu, arame, dulse, wakame, hiziki and nori especially provide these minerals. They also remove radioactive particles that have already settled deep within the organs. The optimum intake of sea vegetables is one to three tablespoons daily.

Beans are a concentrated source of vitamins minerals and protein. They also contain several properties that inhibit cancer and protect against radiation. Aduki beans, lentils, and chick-peas are among the most balanced and strengthening beans and best for regular use. Tempeh is a fermented soy bean product that strengthens the nervous system and the immune system, helps build red blood cells and blocks the intake of radioactive cobalt-60 and zinc-65. About 10 to 15 percent of the food we eat should be beans or other protein products.

Miso is a past made from soybeans and sea salt, often mixed with rice barley or other grains. Naturally existing bacteria cause the mixture to ferment and produce enzymes that help digestion. The binding agent zybicolin in miso is effective in detoxifying and eliminating elements that are taken into the body through industrial pollution radioactivity and artificial chemicals in the soil and food system.

Miso soup (see recipe) contains all the amino acids considered essential by modern nutritionists. It stimulates the secretion of digestive fluids in the stomach restores the intestinal flora aids in the digestion and assimilation of other foods in the intestines and is a good vegetable-quality source of B vitamins (especially B12) calcium and iron. Miso soup also strengthens the quality of the blood and lymph and detoxifies the body of the harmful effects of excessive animal food sugar and other extreme substances. Through the process of fermentation the sea salt in the miso does not have the same qualities as table salt nor its harmful effects. However, the amount of miso used should not exceed 2 teaspoons per person per day.

MISO SOUP:

Ingredients:

Approximately 1/3 cup wakame seaweed (after soaked)
4-5 cups of water
1/2 to 1 teaspoon miso per cup of water (generally 3-year-old unpasteurized barley miso is recommended for daily use)

1. Rinse the wakame quickly under cold running water and soak it approximately 10 minutes. Cut it into 1-inch pieces.

2. Bring the water to a boil in a saucepan and add the seaweed; simmer for about 10-15 minutes until the wakame is tender.

3. Take 1/2 cup of hot water from the soup and dilute the miso in it.

4. Turn the flame VERY LOW and add the diluted miso.

5. Simmer the soup on a low flame for 1 to 2 more minutes (it will look like "clouds" are generally moving upward in the broth). BE CAREFUL NOT TO BOIL THE MISO which will destroy its beneficial enzymes.

6. You can add vegetables (especially finely chopped greens such as parsley or watercress), tofu, seitan (also known as gluten), fish, tempeh and noodles to the soup. Extreme care should be taken when serving children miso soup or any other foods to which salt is added. Children under ten months should not have miso soup. For children ten months to seven years old the miso soup should be diluted. Children ten months to one year should only have one to two teaspoons of diluted miso soup daily.

PRESSURE-COOKED BROWN RICE: (same recipe following at this point in the letter is repeated in 1/9/92 POW--see below)

MORNING CEREAL:

Pressure-cooked rice can be used to make morning cereal. You can make a creamy rice cereal by boiling 1/2 cup of quick oats in 3 cups of water for 20 minutes. Then add approximately 3 to 4 cups of pressure-cooked brown rice and boil on a low flame for another 10 to 15 minutes. This cereal and miso soup (with vegetables seitan etc. if desired) is a good macrobiotic breakfast and is also a good equivalent for a fast.) When the food is chewed 50-200 times per mouthful it becomes totally liquefied before it is swallowed and is therefore well prepared for the body to absorb. Thoroughly mixed with your alkalizing saliva it heals and balances the body while you refrain from other foods. Traditionally in the East rice and miso soup have been used as the main foods for healing."

[Footnote to POW Vol.35 No.6, January 9, 1992]:

"If you decide to fast during Lent try pressure-cooked brown rice and bancha tea. It's a fantastic fast! Rice focuses the perfect balance of Alpha and Omega the yin and the yang the plus and the minus. Fasting on rice will assist you in balancing these energies in the body. Make your fast a holy experience beginning with the cooking of the rice itself.

The Messenger suggests that you offer the rosary or sing bhajans while you prepare it. You can partake of the rice at intervals whenever you feel the need for sustaining nourishment. Let it be a period of spiritual meditation. As you peacefully eat the rice visualize yourself taking in the Light of Alpha and Omega. Bless each mouthful as you receive the Light of your Father-Mother God with which they endow it. Eat the rice slowly in small amounts being certain to chew each mouthful at least 50 times. While chewing you can silently give the mantra "I AM Alpha and Omega in the white fire core of being." The bancha tea which is also very balanced can be sipped and swallowed with the rice or drunk 10 to 20 minutes after eating the rice.

Fasting on brown rice is a celebration of wholeness.  The Messenger has said:

"Each time I look at a kernel of rice I think of the great whole of the cosmos and the Tao and the yin and yang and this blessed balanced food. It is almost like taking Holy Communion to receive it into the mouth in peace and in contemplation of God--to chew each mouthful a minimum of 50 times for the assimilation as it were of the Body and Blood of the Universal Christ to take that in and feel the balancing of one's forces and then to proceed with one's preferred meditation. It is a wonderful spiritual exercise. You will find a tremendous peace coming into your being because in every organ that is too yang the rice will provide the spiritual yinness; in every organ that is too yin the rice will provide the spiritual yangness. And day by day and little by little you will be bringing balance as an alchemist of the Spirit to your physical body."

Although the brown rice fast is entirely optional, it is recommended as a sustaining fast by which you can observe Lent and also receive healthful benefits. You may wish to fast one to three days and then eat cooked vegetables and other grains (barley as spring approaches) for a day or two or a week. In addition if you would like to give up something for Lent the Messenger suggests that you abstain from red meat and sweets.

On March 25 1989 Elohim Astrea spoke of fasting on brown rice and bancha tea. Beloved Astrea said of this fast:

"This indeed is a fasting and a self-emptying that has a spiritual/physical purpose. It is for the victory of the soul, the sharpening of the mind and the intensifying of the fire of the spirit. See then what incurable condition of psyche or mind or body you may heal by such a participation."

PRESSURE-COOKED BROWN RICE

Ingredients:

4 cups short-grain brown rice
7 to 8 cups purified water
1 pinch of sea salt per cup of rice (Muramoto sea salt is best)

(Note: If you have an allergy to pressure-cooked brown rice or have problems digesting it try toasting your rice before cooking it. Follow steps 1 through 3 below. Then while the rice is still wet put it in a cast-iron skillet. Start with the flame on high and stir the rice continually. It will take about 10 minutes for the rice to dry. When dry lower the flame to medium. Keep stirring the rice for about 10 more minutes until it turns a golden color. Transfer the rice to the pressure cooker and proceed to step 4.)

1. Sort the rice on a tray or cookie sheet to remove small rocks and debris.
2. Put 4 cups of short-grain brown rice in a stainless-steel pressures cooker
3. Wash the rice by adding approximately 7 to 8 cups water. Stir gently with your hand in a clockwise or counterclockwise direction. Pour the water out using a strainer. Repeat 3 times.
4. Add 7 to 8 cups of purified water to the rice in the pressure cooker. The amount of water you used depends on how moist or dry you want the rice.
5. Put the pressure cooker on a high flame and bring to a boil without the lid.
6. When the water boils remove the foam that has come to the surface. It may contain debris.
7. Add 4 pinches of sea salt. Cover and seal the pressure cooker.
8. Leave on a high flame until the pressure is high enough.
9. Reduce flame to low and cook the rice for 50 minutes. You may need to put a flame diffuser under the pot to prevent burning.
10. Remove the rice from the stove. Do not take the lid off until the pressure has dissipated naturally (about 15 minutes). If you are in a hurry and must remove the lid immediately first put the pot under cold running water.
11. Take the lid off the pot and gently stir the rice with a wooden spoon.

PURCHASING INFORMATION:
Purchase organic rice if possible as non-organic rice may contain pesticides and chemicals. Many large grocery chains now carry health food items including brown rice. Natural food co-ops and health food stores often carry rice in bulk at a lesser price. One good brand is Lundberg which offers an excellent quality of organic short-grain brown rice. When purchasing a pressures cooker it is important to choose one made of stainless steel rather than aluminum. Most large hardware stores or cooking-equipment stores carry stainless steel models. Presto makes both aluminum and stainless-steel pressure cookers for home use. There are also many excellent European models available through health food stores and oriental shops. The Aeternum brand advertised in health food publications is available in many sizes from 3 to 12 liters.

BANCHA TWIG TEA (KUKICHA)

1. Place 1-1/2 to 2 tablespoons of toasted twigs in 1-1/2 quarts of purified water and bring to a boil. (If you have untoasted twigs you can toast them first in a dry cast-iron skillet. Stir constantly on medium heat until toasted.)
2. When the water boils reduce heat to low and simmer for several minutes-- about 3 minutes for a light tea and up to 12 minutes for a stronger tea.
3. To serve pour tea through a small strainer. The twigs can be reused several times.  Note: Keep unused dry twigs in an airtight jar in order to preserve the flavor. Wet used twigs should be stored in the refrigerator.

PURCHASING INFORMATION:
When shopping for bancha tea be certain to get the twigs rather than leaves or a combination of leaves and twigs. (Toasted twigs are preferable.) Bancha leaves haves a much higher percentage of caffeine than the twigs which have only a trace. The twigs are rich in calcium iron complex carbohydrates vitamin A vitamin C thiamine riboflavin and niacin. The minute amount of caffeine stimulates digestion and does not harm the body as does coffee. In fact it is the best drink for you when you decide to give up coffee for good. Recommended brands of bancha are Mitoku and Eden. Both are available in organic stock. Many health food stores and some large grocery chains carry macrobiotic items such as bancha tea. If your local stores do not stock bancha tea ask if it can be ordered for you. Most health food stores will order special items for customers upon request."

During the New Year's Retreat, the Messenger lectured on the macrobiotic diet, including how human behavior and physical and mental health relate to the condition of the body's organs and what foods are beneficial to the organs. The diet was given by Sanat Kumara to the Lightbearers and, among others, to Lord Lanto when he was embodied as the Yellow Emperor (c.2704 b.c.). The principles of macrobiotics are based on The Yellow Emperor's Classic of Internal Medicine (the Nei Ching), the oldest known book of Chinese medicine.
